Scoring Goals to End Hunger

Bridget Folger

How would you describe your "Choose To Matter" project?
More than 60,000 children go hungry each year in the Blue Ridge area alone; their only food coming from school breakfasts and lunches. There is a program called the BackPack program the helps these children in need by giving the children food when they aren’t in school. Scoring Goals to End Hunger is raising money to help support that program.
What is your project goal?
My goal is to raise $10,000 to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank BackPack program, but I would like it to spread nationally. I am raising money until I graduate by asking for donations from friends, family, and businesses. I have established a virtual food drive so that people can donate online.
What were you able to accomplish with this project?
So far I have been able to raise $5,010 which included a large donation from my community Hospital, as well as many individual donations. I set up a table at the homecoming game and raised $200 and I hope to do the same with high school soccer. I created a facebook page along with a YouTube video to expose my project to a bigger audience. I even got one donation from a national skin care company.
How did “choosing to matter” affect you?
After this project I realized that there are many people who cannot eat whenever they want or even at all. I also realized that I could help them. Before this project I didn’t like talking to people I didn’t know, let alone asking them for money. I found that every time I had to speak with someone it got easier. I have also learned how to manage my time better.
